About the award

The Ralph Vigoda Award for Outstanding Journalism, bearing the name of an esteemed Inquirer reporter who died in 2003, reflects the high professional standards and caring and sharing attitude that Ralph brought to his 17 years at The Inquirer and everything else in life that he did.

This $1,000 award honors employees whose efforts demonstrate the highest level of skill and accomplishment and contribute to the editorial quality of the Inquirer and its products.

Anyone may make a nomination, and the prize committee encourages everyone to participate and bring to its attention examples of outstanding work. Nominations should include a description of the person’s contribution and an explanation of why it stands out. Where appropriate, hyperlinks should be included.

Each month, the committee of former winners reviews nominations and selects a winner or winners. Since many accomplishments worthy of being honored happen behind the scenes and are not readily recognized, the prize committee encourages everyone to inform us of such efforts and help us to acknowledge that work.

Winners’ names are announced in the newsroom or via Zoom, and then also by e-mail. The presentation speech and photos will be posted on https://vigodaaward.wordpress.com.
